“Those who know your name trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you” (Psalm 9:10). If we know the character of God, we can trust that he will finish what he’s started.
THE TRUST FALL
Think of your life with God like one giant trust fall.
In a trust fall, you close your eyes, fold your arms over your chest, and allow yourself to fall into the arms of those around you without flinching or worrying. It’s all about feeling confident that your friends, classmates, or coworkers will catch you, and it goes against everything your natural instincts tell you to do. While you free-fall backward into the unknown, your head is telling you to turn around and take a peek in order to ensure your partner really does have his or her arms stretched out for you. Your muscles are telling you to reach out and catch yourself. These natural instincts are good. Your body doesn’t want you to plummet to the ground and get injured. But to have a successful trust fall, you have to let go and take that first step of trust.
Trust is a funny thing. Just as in this weird exercise, at some point in your relationship with each person around you, you have to take that first step of trust. When you initiate a new friendship, you’re trusting that the person will treat you well, not slander your name to others, and be there for you when you need them. When you take a recommendation for a new Mediterranean restaurant or watch a movie’s teaser and then decide to eat at that restaurant or see that movie, your actions demonstrate your trust in a person’s taste or a trailer’s promise. You must choose to take that first step.
You can also choose to stop trusting those around you. Maybe a friend started some rumor. Maybe a remark was spoken that hurt your feelings. Just as we can take a step toward trusting someone, we can also take a step away from trusting someone.
If you closely examine your life, you might be surprised to discover that many of your decisions are based on this thing called trust. Trust is a big deal, and if you want to live out the great plan that God has for your life and move past the destruction that came with your broken dream, it’s a necessary step.
Proverbs 3:5–6 talks about the importance of a life motivated by trust, saying, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
To drop everything and submit to God every step of the way, you first have to be completely confident in who he is. He is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all about you. He’s ready to walk with you through his plan because he loves you unconditionally. You can expect him to get you to your best possible tomorrow, but you can’t expect him to lay it all out for you.
